The Doom Rapid Response Tactical Squad uniform was supplemented by a large amount of additional equipment, making the soldiers of the RRTS truly tooled up for the corporate jobs that they would be called upon to carry out. Each individual RRTS Marine had a body armour vest with five press-stud closing belt loops and a variety of pouches (the number, style and positioning changing for each RRTS member); a belt with further pouches, a knife sheath and holsters (where applicable); and a communicator handset and ear piece. Further equipment including air quality reading handsets, torches and so on were also carried by several members.
The body armour was custom made for the movie - a two-piece assembly made to the dimensions of each character, which is fastened with a variety of velcro closures. The vests are made out of a thin, breathable soft-sheened material on the inside surface but on the outside it is a thicker material. They are padded with 1/4" thick closed-cell foam, with the pockets filled with blocks of white polystyrene, and each vest has the character, scene designation, intention of use and (normally with the stunt double vests) the actor who would be wearing it. These details are written in silver pen.
As mentioned before, each of the vests was made to measure and pouch layouts varied from character to character.
Reaper's vest, used in the FPS scene. Internally, the vest actually says "John Grimm - FOR REHEARSALS ONLY", but this vest and the overalls it came with were both reused for the scene. This is confirmed by the costume department tag attached to the set (pictured) and also by screenmatching.
The front of the vest has two magazine pouches flanked by a small utility pouch and two smaller pouches on each side. The chest has one of the thinner utility chest pouches with the loops for the comm unit on the vest's left, and at the top is a faux-pouch representing the slip for the kevlar insert that is present on real vests. On the back of the vest are four of the long 'magazine' pouches.
Duke's vest and belt gear, worn throughout the movie up until the scene in the Dig where he and The Kid have to find the two remaining scientists' corpses, confirmed by a call sheet found in the chest pocket and its costume department tag (pictured).
The vest has a square utility pouch centrally flanked by two magazine pouches and topped by a small box pouch, loops for an uncovered comm unit and a wide 'slip' flap at the top. On the back, there are two pairs of smaller pouches which are either side of another, slightly elongated, utility pouch in the centre of the back.
The belt gear is as follows, from right hand side to left: a custom made pistol magazine pouch with velcro closure, a Guarder Tornado universal adjustible holster, a small custom made utility pouch with velcro closure, a purchased waterproofed medical pouch with a clip closure, a wide custom made utility pouch with velcro closure, another small custom made utility pouch with velcro closure, and an unmodified United Cutlery Pathfinder Tactical knife and sheath.
Here we can see an example of the polystyrene padding used to fill the vest pouches. The top is always painted black to prevent it showing through from under the pouch flaps. And underneath...
We find 'evidence of use'. A callsheet and script was also found in there. Raz, if you're reading, it's a dirty habit!
Below we have photos of the contents of the central rear pouch. Where all the other pouches (excluding the practical pouches such as this one and pistol magazine pouch) were filled with bubblewrap wrapped in soft black cloth, this one is being used to store a complete medical kit of the kind seen used on Goat during the medical bay sequence after he is mortally wounded by the Sewer Imp.
The contents of the small black internal pouch (much like a travel bag) are: 2 compressed gauze rolls, a pack of QuikClot blood clotting powder and a cinch-tight compressed dressing. All of these are seen in use in the movie - the QuikClot and the dressing during Goat's death scene in the medbay and the gauze rolls wrapped around Duke's shoulder after his altercation with the Imp in the medbay corridor.
Duke's comm. There are many different kinds of comm used in the movie - this is one of the non-closeup rubber comms with a metal backplate added for clipping onto the vests.
Duke Stunt Body Armour and Overalls
Duke's stunt double vest and overalls, formerly of the Doom Movie Archive collection. The vest was from a later set used towards the end of the movie - Number 7. As you can see, the vest is named to "Mark", who was Mark Newman, one of the primary stunt doubles for the movie.
The Kid's stunt double vest, formerly from the Doom Movie Archive collection. Named to Pavel Dvorpcik, an uncredited Czech stunt performer. Pouch layout on the vests, as is clear from the photographs, is a large central pouch flanked by two "ammunition" pouches, with the wide utility pouch above with the slit for the comm unit, and the wide faux pouch at the top. Further around to the sides are two smaller pouches either side, and there is one central pouch in the small of the back at the rear.
Destroyer Prototype Body Armour
Destroyer prototype vest, one of two purchased from the backlot at the Propstore of London. These were made for DeObia Oparei for the film but never used, though it has been suggested they may have been used in the DVD cover photo (where Destroyer is seen carrying Sarge's rifleas opposed to his signature machine gun). The front is covered in 'magazine' pouches, the only vest made for the film to do so, with both of the chest pouches intact. The back pouches are similar to Sarge, with the two magazine pouches sandwiching a wider utility pouch.
A hole has not been cut out for Destroyer's comm unit as the vest itself didn't have the extended second chest pouch (visible on The Kid's and Sarge's vests, though Sarge's vest didn't have the hole made or the comm present on his Unrated DVD Cover uniform - perhaps another indicator of pre-production use?), and the velcro remains intact without use after manufacture. Inside the vest, a scribbled out costume label indicates this vest was made for DeObia Oparei, but has the word "MEG" also scribbled out below it. To date I am still unsure what this means, as it could mean something in Czech, or an unused character name, or might even be a misspelling. If anyone could shed light on this, I would love to know!
